If I Have to Be Haunted launch event

Books Inc. Mountain View is thrilled to welcome Miranda Sun to the shop, for the launch of her debut YA novel, If I Have to be Haunted!

Miranda will be joined in conversation by beloved authors Allison Saft & Ava Reid.

Cemetery Boys meets Legendborn in this romantic YA contemporary fantasy debut that follows a teenage Chinese American ghost speaker who (reluctantly) makes a deal to raise her nemesis from the dead.

Cara Tang doesn’t want to be haunted.

Look, the dead have issues, and Cara has enough of her own. Her overbearing mother insists she be the “perfect” Chinese American daughter—which means suppressing her ghost-speaking powers—and she keeps getting into fights with Zacharias Coleson, the local golden boy whose smirk makes her want to set things on fire.

Then she stumbles across Zach’s dead body in the woods. He’s even more infuriating as a ghost, but Cara’s the only one who can see him—and save him.

Agreeing to resurrect him puts her at odds with her mother, draws her into a dangerous liminal world of monsters and magic—and worse, leaves her stuck with Zach. Yet as she and Zach grow closer, forced to depend on each other to survive, Cara finds the most terrifying thing is that she might not hate him so much after all.

Maybe this is why her mother warned her about ghosts.

Delightful and compulsively readable, this contemporary fantasy features a snarky voice, a magnetic enemies-to-lovers romance, and a spirited adventure through a magical, unpredictable world hidden within our own.

This Dark Descent launch party @ Books Inc. Pruneyard

Books Inc. Pruneyard proudly welcomes back local author Kalyn Josephson for a pre-launch event celebrating her new YA Fantasy, This Dark Descent!

Kalyn will be in conversation with fellow author Allison Saft.

Inspired by Jewish mythology, The Scorpio Races meets Peaky Blinders in this dual-POV YA fantasy by Kalyn Josephson where the daughter of a famous horse breeder, an unlicensed enchanter, and an ambitious heir must work together to win a cutthroat magical horserace.

The Rusel family is famous throughout Enderlain as breeders of enchanted horses, but their prestige is no match for their rising debts. To save her family's ranch, Mikira Rusel is left with only one option: enter the Illinir, a treacherous, cross-country horse race known for its high body count as much as its enticing prize money.

To have any chance of success, Mikira will have to recruit Arielle Kadar, a talented but unlicensed enchanter who creates golems in place of enchanted animals, and Damien Adair, a dashing young lord in the midst of a fierce succession battle. Both have mysterious reasons of their own to help Mikira -- as well as their own blood feuds to avenge.

Steeped in Jewish folklore, This Dark Descent is a beguiling new fantasy full of intrigue, romance, and pulse-pounding action. In a world as dangerous as this, will hidden agendas and conflicting desires butcher Mikira, Ari, and Damien's chances of winning the Illinir. . . or will another rider's dagger?

The Spirit Bares Its Teeth event @ Books Inc. Mountain View

I’ll be chatting with Andrew Joseph White about his next novel, The Spirit Bares Its Teeth!

Mors vincit omnia. Death conquers all.

London, 1883. The Veil between the living and dead has thinned. Violet-eyed mediums commune with spirits under the watchful eye of the Royal Speaker Society, and sixteen-year-old Silas Bell would rather rip out his violet eyes than become an obedient Speaker wife. According to Mother, he'll be married by the end of the year. It doesn't matter that he's needed a decade of tutors to hide his autism; that he practices surgery on slaughtered pigs; that he is a boy, not the girl the world insists on seeing.

After a failed attempt to escape an arranged marriage, Silas is diagnosed with Veil sickness--a mysterious disease sending violet-eyed women into madness--and shipped away to Braxton's Finishing School and Sanitorium. The facility is cold, the instructors merciless, and the students either bloom into eligible wives or disappear. When the ghosts of missing students start begging Silas for help, he decides to reach into Braxton's innards and expose its guts to the world--if the school doesn't break him first.

Featuring an autistic trans protagonist in a historical setting, Andrew Joseph White's much-anticipated sophomore novel does not back down from exposing the violence of the patriarchy and the harm inflicted on trans youth who are forced into conformity.

Wrangling Dual POVs

I’ll be speaking at the Escape the Plot Forest summit on Monday, October 18! It’s online and entirely free! You can register at the link below. My talk is called Wrangling Dual POVs.

“So, you've mastered story structure, having diligently studied frameworks like, say, Save the Cat or the Hero's Journey. But what happens to those frameworks when we add a second narrator? In this session, we'll discuss how to execute a dual-POV story using the story beats you're already familiar with. We'll also discuss how to craft the emotionally and thematically rich narratives that dual POV affords: ones where your protagonists are two sides of the same coin.”
